This is the most common complaint about custom temporary tattoos and it has exactly one cause, which is fixable at the quoting stage for very little money.

What is actually happening

The inks used in transfer tattoos are translucent by design, so the tattoo does not sit on skin like a sticker.

That means whatever is underneath shows through. On skin, that is skin tone, and it shifts every colour towards it.

Why it looks fine in the proof

Proofs are printed on white paper. White is exactly the background the ink needs, so the colours look correct.

The moment the same film goes onto skin, the background changes and so does every colour in the design.

The fix

A printed white layer beneath the colour. The ink then sits on white rather than on skin, and reads as the approved colour on every skin tone.

It costs a little more per sheet and makes the film edge very slightly more visible. That is the whole trade.

When you can skip it

A single-colour black design, which reads on most skin without help. Or a metallic foil, which is opaque already.

For everything in full colour going to a general audience, print the underlay.
