White-Underlay Tattoos

Tattoo inks are translucent. Printed straight onto skin they mix with the skin tone underneath, which is why a bright design can look correct on a pale forearm and disappear entirely on dark skin.

A printed white layer underneath the colour stops that. The colour then sits on white rather than on skin, and reads as the colour on the proof for everybody. It is the single most important thing on this site and it is left off by default almost everywhere.

It costs a little more and it does make the film very slightly more visible at the edges, which is worth knowing. For any design meant for a general audience — a festival, a stadium, a public campaign — we would specify it every time and we say why.
